Foster Care Expo

What if the Church? Foster Care Expo welcomes families or individuals interested in taking the next step in becoming family for children in foster care.

The Expo will take place simultaneously in Kansas at New City Church (7456 Nieman Rd, Shawnee, KS) and Missouri at Paseo Baptist Church (2501 The Paseo, Kansas City, MO). Learn about how foster care works in your state, hear from foster families and connect with licensing agencies in your area and consider next steps.

Desired Outcome: Stock foster agency with newborn necessities. These items would be given to foster families who take in infants.

Overview: Host a "baby shower" and have women bring gifts of diapers, formula and baby items to donate to local foster agencies. Check with agency to find out if items must be new, or can be gently used, and what type of items they need most.

Desired Outcome: Provide suitcases for foster children. Most children are offered a trash bag for their belongings. This would meet a huge need in our community that would give dignity to foster children.

Overview: Do a suitcase/duffle bag drive. Ask for new or like-new luggage so children have more than trash bags to store and transport their belongings. Have a trailer parked in front of your church and set days to drop off luggage and deliver to agencies.

Desired Outcome: Provide duffle bags for foster kids, including a stuffed animal, coloring book, basic hygiene supplies and a blanket. Most kids are given a trash bag for transporting their items.

Overview:  The Mission of Gillis is to help at-risk children and families reach their potential through education, counseling and social services. The Vision of Gillis is that all children and families will live in emotionally stable, safe and nurturing environments.

Gillis needs help with their new garden, landscaping or weeding, planting seasonal annuals, refurbishing top soil, etc.

Overview: These room are where parents get to visit with their children. These rooms are currently dingy and cold, they need a warm inviting space. This serve project would include removing the current content and completing a completely new environment. Rooms need to be painted, new furniture assembled, and old furniture hauled off.

Desired Outcome: Fund and Assemble Playground

Overview: This  playground would be used by the KVC children, families and staff to provide a safe place to play and interact during parent/child visitation and for the children who are waiting at the KVC offices.  

Currently, KVC owns the land that the playground will be built upon. KVC has also created plans for the playground. However, no equipment has yet to be purchased.

Overview: Demolition, cleaning house out to get ready for remodeling, outside work like fixing fence, repairing guttering and power washing house.

There are several projects at this site that can be separated out for different groups, or can be adopted as one large project by one group. Please contact Laura above for more information.

Overview: Volunteers will pack gallon ziplock baggies - according to gender, size & use - with one complete set of daytime or nighttime clothes, plus socks and underwear. Volunteers will label bags (ex, 5T/Boy/Night). Grab & Go Bags will be placed into labeled bins and stored in KVC-Olathe warehouse for distribution to families receiving children who are new to foster care.
